Behind the Scenes
Here is what I have been doing the last few months for my art show come September
Behind the scenes of making artwork, there’s a lot more going on than just the final picture you see. For kids—especially those with sensory needs—the process is often more important than the outcome. When a child dips their fingers into paint, squishes playdough, or experiments with textures, they’re learning how different materials feel, move, and react. This trial-and-error process helps them build problem-solving skills and creativity, while also giving them a safe space to explore without worrying about “right” or “wrong.” Behind every piece of art, there may have been moments of discovery—like realizing how colors mix, or how glue feels sticky before it dries smooth. For children with sensory challenges, these small behind-the-scenes steps can be powerful tools for self-expression and regulation, making the act of creating just as valuable as the artwork itself.
